Musicians: Building a Fan Base
by admin on Aug.29, 2009, under Music
Lathum asked:
Building a fan base is an important step for any band interested in elevating their recording and performing career. With attention and planning, even a modest following can become a powerful tool to support an artist’s work and expand their popularity.
People are attracted to bands on musical, cultural, social, sensory and spiritual levels. While fitting in to current trends may result in a rush of flavor-of-the-month fans, the artists who pursue and stay true to their own musical vision appear to have a greater chance at creating a broad, dedicated fan base. Rolling Stone contributed Kentucky-based band My Morning Jacket’s broad success to their unique musical vision, noting “The band’s ecstatic, spacey records and improv-heavy live shows are as popular with Bonnaroo hippies as they are with New York hipsters.” Frontman Jim James told the magazine, “We love that…Looking in the audience and seeing frat boys, indie rockers and maybe some sixty-year-old women.”
In the digital age, artists shouldn’t be afraid to give music away in order to reach more people. Andrew Dubber of NewMusicStrategies wrote an article titled “The 20 Things You MUST Know About Music Online” which counsels musicians to “forget product–sell relationship.” In a recent interview, Dubber told HomeTracked: “I recommend (musicians) recognize that their recordings are not the totality of their economic value. Recordings are idealized performances that show musicians in their best light. These are the best promotional tools available…And if records are the way you want to make your money, just think of it this way: it used to be that you’d press 1000 copies, give away 200 promos, and hope to sell the other 800. Now you can press 1000 copies, give away a million copies and sell the thousand.”
Once a band has earned a small fan base by playing shows and giving away music, it’s important to retain their interest and encourage networking by keeping them up to date with current songs, concerts and a steady flow of appealing merchandise. The digital age presents a number of ways to accomplish this, with maintaining a web site, posting profiles on social music sites like Echoboost, email, internet radio, podcasts and social video sites. Performing Songwriter suggests networking through cell phones using fan club text messaging services like Broadtexter, which “enables North America-based musicians to create free Mobile Fan Clubs which easily allow them to use regionalized text messaging to stay connected with fans.”
At the end of the day, it’s vital for bands to take their relationships with fans as seriously as their music. The acts who consistently provide people with appealing music, quality live performances and a steady stream of positive interaction will build their fan base while increasing their chances of long-term loyalty.

William Axl Rose: The Rock Star From Indiana

Attila Jancsina asked:
William Axl Rose: The Rock Star From Indiana
William Axl Rose is best known as being the frontman and vocalist of the “most dangerous band in the world,” Guns and Roses. Rose stayed on through the turbulent last years of the band, eventually acquiring the rights to the name and setting up a new lineup for Guns and Roses.
Rose is known for his rants during concerts, and for the riots that he caused for deliberately cutting off shows and concerts ahead of time. He was also notorious for several arrests due to alleged possession of drugs and being intoxicated with alcohol. Rose is also currently controversial due to the decade-long delay in the release of his album Chinese Democracy.
Rose hails from Indiana, information on which can be found in http://www.indianahut.com.
Childhood Years
Born William Bruce Rose, Jr. in Lafayette, Indiana, Rose was a product of a broken family. His father, William Rose, abandoned them when he was but two years old. According to Rose, therapy has revealed to him repressed memories of sexual abuse at the hands of his father.
His mother remarried to L. Stephen Bailey, which resulted in Rose carrying his step-father’s family name. At the hands of Bailey, Rose witnessed domestic violence inflicted on his mother even though the household was a deeply religious Pentecostal household.
Even though Rose expressed his musical interests through Church, he would later on speak of being disillusioned of his religious upbringing. In an interview, he would claim to “[teaching] Bible school while… being beaten and [his sister] was being molested.” Rose also said that his church was full of hyprocrites suffering from self-rightneousness, who abused and molested children.
As a child, Rose and his two siblings sang in church as the “Bailey Trio.” He also studied classical piano, on which he would later on write the famous GnR song “November Rain.”
Teenage Years
Axl Rose found out about his true family background when he was 17. He learned of his birth name, William Bruce Rose Jr., and his father’s name. As a result, Rose readopted his birth name but refused to be called “William,” as he did not want to be identified with his biological father.
Teenage years were rebellious times for Axl Rose, with over 20 counts of public drunkenness as well as assault in his record. However, it was also when he was 17 that he first met Izzy Stradlin, the future rhythm guitarist of Guns and Roses. The two bonded for a while, before Stradlin left Indiana and moved to Los Angeles. Rose followed suit later on, as per legal advice.
Guns N’ Roses
After arriving in Los Angeles, Rose started playing in several bands, most significant of these being L.A Guns and Hollywood Rose while retaining several jobs. In 1985, Rose and Tracii Guns formed Guns and Roses from the remnants of L.A Guns and Hollywood Rose, along with Ole Beich and Duff McKagan, who would form part of the line-up that the world would later on know.
Several changes in lineup occurred until 1986, when the Guns and Roses that the world knew was formed. Guns and Roses was born with Saul “Slash” Hudson on lead guitar, Izzy Stradlin on rhythm guitar, McKagan on bass, Steven Adler on Drums and, of course, Rose on vocals.
Although they released a four-song EP “Live Like a Suicide” in December 1986, it was not until the release of “Appetite for Destruction” on July 21, 1987 that Guns and Roses would be officially recognized by the mainstream. The success of the debut album continues until this day, being certified 15 times platinum with sales of upwards of 27 million copies.
From 1986 onwards, Guns and Roses released several albums, most notable of which were the two Use Your Illusion albums. It was in the recording of these albums that Steven Adler was kicked out due to drug abuse and replaced by Matt Sorum. It was also during the tour for these albums in 1991 that Axl Rose wrestled ownership of the Guns N’ Roses name from the bandmates, from which strained relationships occurred between Rose and the other Gunners.
By 1997, Sorum, Slash and McKagan had left the band. Stradlin had also left the band in 1991. Only Dizzy Reed – who had joined as keyboardist during the recording of the Illusion albums – and Rose remained as original members.
Current Events
After the departure of the original members, Guns and Roses underwent several lineup changes. The band now currently consists of Reed, Rose, Robin Finck, Tommy Stinson, Chris Pitman, Richard Fortus, Frank Ferrer and Ron Thal.
The world also currently awaits the release of Chinese Democracy, the band’s first original album since the two Illusion albums, which had been constantly postponed since the late 1990′s.

Web Site Dedicated to Providing Unfettered Interview Exchange for Independent Musicians and Their Fans Launches
by admin on Aug.22, 2009, under Music
Eric de Fontenay asked:
Uncensored Interview (www.uncensoredinterview.com) is the first of its kind, dedicated to giving independent musicians and their fans a voice through an interactive interface. Via streaming video, Uncensored Interview showcases interviews with indie bands across all genres.
“The truth is, indie music fans just don’t have outlets like TV and radio to access the indie musician world,” said Marisa Bangash, founder of Uncensored Interview. “Today, the internet is the place for art, ideas and intimacy to be exchanged. Uncensored Interview is the site for indie artists, fans and music aficionados to experience, learn, express, unite, and debate.”
Uncensored Interview provides a needed channel for bands to reach to fans, express their feelings and share themselves beyond their music. It is a forum where theplatonicband/fan relationship which thrives in the indie music world is respected and allowed to grow.
Uncensored Interview recognizes that passive is out when it comes to online behavior and encourages users to “talk back” to the bands and share their views via video. The interviews captured highlight the indie artist’s opinions and ideas. Then a grassroots, non-linear video conversation becomes the name of the game. The uncensored interviews produced for the site and user-generated content known as “v-sponses” create a forum for the two parties to interact on topics ranging from global warming to sex with fans to the state of the music industry.
“With the major labels failing, airwaves filled with disposable music and cookie cutter artists being pushed as the next big thing – fans need a way to cut through the clutter,” said Bangash. “Uncensored Interview is a reference point for people to find the diamonds in the rough.”
Artists interviewed also talk about what they know best and why they are recognized – their music. More than just commentary on their own albums, bands converse about everything that affects their lives as musicians, including touring, influences, the music industry, media and challenges they face. Some of the content also serves as advice for aspiring musicians.
Uncensored Interview’s videos encompass broader social issues as well since artists develop their work based on their experiences as individuals. To capture what compels each artist and share it with fans introduces a new way for the two parties to connect.
The Interview Process: Step by Step
* Starts with a simple thought shared by the indie artists captured and published by Uncensored Interview producers.
* Videos featuring the indie artist are published online and are ready for viewing.
* Socially aware individuals, indie artists, fans, music aficionados and the bands themselves interact by uploading their own videos in response (the v-sponses) to the original band videos or to other v-sponses.
* The end result – video conversations that are interactive, intellectual, meaningful, ever-changing and uncensored.
Videos on Uncensored Interview are classified into several channels, delivering content based on the user’s preference; whether by genre or by area of interest. Interviews take place in locations where the artist feels most comfortable – a favorite bar, rehearsal space or even a toilet seat. From here, artists speak in an unrestricted environment, enabling their fans to get a voyeuristic glimpse into their worlds. Uncensored Interview doesn’t string together pieces of the interview to create an enhanced image of the artists; but instead provides raw, truthful moments as they happen.

How to Make a Band Press Kit
by admin on Aug.22, 2009, under Music
Jeremy Elkins asked:
It is very important as a musician to heave a well put together press kit that will help steam roll your path to success in the music industry. Press kits are also commonly called "media kits" and "artist bio" but they all used for the same thing which is to help with Music Promotion, Music Publicity, Booking Agents and Band Promotion. There are a lot of bands out there all gunning for the same venues, radio play and magazine interviews which is why you are more likely to successfully snag all of these opportunities with the Press kit I’m going to help you build.
Lets get started with the basics and go from there:
COVER- A first impression is a lasting impression so make sure this aspect of your press kit really shines, let this be the part that introduces you to the venues, radio stations and magazines. Include what genre of music you play, your band logo (eye catching) and your contact information for the band (Myspace, Website, Phone numbers and email).
ARTIST INTRO PAGE (Bio)- Start off by introducing your group followed by the band members (if any), follow that with the style of music you play and list any genres you may have. Go into naming some quality venues, clubs etc. you have played at in the past and which cities or regions they were in. Also list important equipment you may have such as amps, PA, Microphones, lights, etc. and any personal you may have that runs the production for your shows. Talk about your fan base, include the size of it and how you communicate with them. List any street team supporters you may have and where they are located. Make sure to differentiate between original music or cover music depending on which one relates to your style and also if you’re an acoustic or electric act. List any promoting techniques you may use to help bring people to your shows seeing how this is the only way to make any money at live venues it is a very important part to getting venues to book your show. List any websites, social networking sites and or flyers you use for promoting shows and music presence. One way to get started is to attend open mic. nights and leave your press kits with venue managers after the show in hopes of getting a gig in the future.
ARTIST PHOTOS- Lets take a look at why it is so very important to have good photos before we talk about how to acquire them. Take a look around at today’s communication behaviors and you will quickly notice that visual imagery is king in the world’s communication. You see it no matter where you are and it would seem that almost everyday new technology comes out that even furthers how we view this media on a day to day basis. This should be setting off a little red alarm in you head telling you that if this is true then it must be vital the way people are viewing you which brings us back to your photos. First impressions are lasting impressions so if you really want to have those in the industry and amongst the music community to take you seriously you will want to get some Professional 8×10?s taken of your music group or single act. Be resourceful in about getting your photos, be sure to shop around and maybe ask friends and family if they know of anyone that can help you out. There isn’t really any need to spend a fortune here if you take your time and do some research first. Have fun with this as well, use your imagination and come up with some fun ways to accurately portray your music.
Booking Information - This is the section of your press kit that contains all of your Booking Information such as the best way to contact you, preferences in types of shows and areas you can travel to perform. It is important to have your contact info in multiple places through out your Press Kit so go ahead and add your phone number and address again in this section as well.
Demo CD You are rarely going to run across a club or venue that will agree to have you come play before they have heard your music and the best way to have them take is a listen is to create a Demo CD. The Demo CD should consist of 2-4 songs each being the best of your material, this is the time to really show them your good stuff. Once again add your contact info to the label that will be placed on this Demo CD which should also include your band name and the list of songs on it. All of this is to help ensure that even if the person or venue you gave the press kit to looses the kit, there might be a good chance that your CD could still be floating around along with how to contact you for gigs. Spend some time into a nice looking CD Cover and label so that who ever sees it will know that you are serious about your music.
SONGS LINEUP Put together a list of your songs that your band might play on a average basis including the best of any cover songs you might add in with your original work. If you might be wanting to do anything else such as a light show or some sort of skit on stage this would be the place to add that in as well.
SHOWS SHEET Your bands shows sheet should include any past gigs you have played and any future ones that you have already lined up to perform at.
BAND / MUSIC REVIEWS To show credibility of your bands music it is very important to include any Music Reviews or news paper clippings on your band into your press kit. If you do not have any of those items then you might want to start getting your music out to resources that can do a review for you such as local newspapers and organizations like www.LocalProMoConnect.com & www.lpmvoice.com
BUSINESS CARDS- Were not saying that you have to present your self as some corporation only aimed at making money but we are saying that you need to treat your music as a base line business which means you will need a card to pass around at every show you go to. You can include your Independent acts business card in the mix of your press kit as well as always keeping a few on you at all times in case you run into the right person that will be able to help you out. You can make your own business cards at almost any copy store for a relatively good deal seeing how they are only made up of paper and ink. And almost every word program comes with a few templates you can use at home and have printed on card stock paper or even just very thick regular paper. Make sure to include your bands Name, Phone, Contact Name, Websites, Email, and any logos you might have to represent your act. You might want to make up a small batch of high quality cards to pass around to industry reps and a bigger batch of average business cards to pass around to the common person but it is up to you and your budget to determine how and when this is all possible.
ENVELOPE- Depending on who your planning to receive your press kit you might want to come up with two very different designs for the envelope it will be going into. Your going to want to stand out in a pile of many envelopes so be sure to use a load color and unique design that captures the attention of the beholder to ensure your press kit wont be overlooked on the desk or in the file cabinet of a venue owner or booking agent. On the other hand you will want to be a bit more settle when it comes to sending your press kit out to record labels or industry reps so try to think of a design that is appealing to the eye but not to distracting. Just be sure to have both styles ready to go on a moments notice in case you have to send them out or hand them off to any and everyone that might be able to help further your musical career. Thanks you for following along with us on successfully building your press kit and we hope all the best to your near future and utilizing these tools.

How to Really Sell Cds Online
by admin on Aug.15, 2009, under Music
Chris Standring asked:
I’m about to tell you a new and highly effective way to sell CDs online from your own website. Listen up because I usually put this stuff into an ebook and sell it for gobs of dough, but frankly I haven’t got time to write a book right now. However, I do want to share this knowledge with you because it works. The question is, how serious are you about your career? because if you don’t have any real commitment and focus then no amount of articles and tips you read will help you. But if you want to rise to the occasion. Read on…
Unlike other motivators, gurus or success coaches, I will never give you academic theories, untried or untested ideas. On the contrary, in fact, the only ideas I will share with you will be those that I have personally tried out and had success with. That’s why I get excited, because I see results, and mostly they are light bulb moments. “Why on earth didn’t I think of that before?” is usually the afterthought.
Over the last seven years I have had an enormous amount of success both as a musician and as an Internet marketer. I say that not to brag, but because I want you to to know that if I can do it, then so can you. We are living in a new age. Truly, the geek will inherit the earth. I guarantee that only the proactive ‘details oriented’, ‘out-of-the-box-thinkers’ will really have success over the next few years. Watch if you don’t believe me.
OK, so where do we start? Do you have a website? Good. Do you have a web designer? If so, he or she must read this because for the most part web designers are not Internet marketers, they make pretty web pages. If you do your own web work (and I highly recommend that you learn), all the better.
I am now going to propose to you that you now have two websites dedicated to your band or act, instead of just one. First, you must have your ‘calling card’ website. You know, your site at www.yourdomain.com that contains all the good basic info about you that fans can read. I’ll talk about the other site in a moment.
Ideally visitors should be finding your main website from a ton of inbound links from other sites. Rather than just getting any old link from another site to point to you, do all that you can to get a ‘golden’ link. By this I mean a highly visible link on a highly trafficked page. Do a joint venture if needs be by promoting their site from yours and so on. But get good solid substantial links from other sites whose demographic would be interested in you. Ask those questions!
If you want to score high in the search engines, make sure that other sites display your keyword in their anchor text. In other words, if you want to score high in Google when someone searches on ‘punk bands’, then make sure that that keyword is in the anchor text of the inbound link. (More on this in huge detail in the “Indie Artist DIY Smartkit” http://www.aandronline.com/smartkit )
OK, now you have a steady flow of traffic to your website. Of course you need to make the site fascinating and seductive. Here’s what you need to understand about your site;
The only reason you have a website online is to collect names and email addresses so you can direct market to your fans!
Sure you want to tell them where and when you will be playing, show them photos etc. But effectively, you do this by direct marketing through email, forming a personal relationship with your fans one by one. And they will love you for it. More on this in a sec.
So the trick now is to figure out how to capture a new visitor. How do you seduce them into your lair? so to speak. Once you have a committed, interested new fan, you can turn this new person into a purchaser, and if you do it right, a fan who will purchase from you time and time again. You do want to make money as a musician, right?
So the secret is getting them to give you their name and email address so your automated system can do the rest. Enter the second website I was just telling you about…
The second website is what we can refer to as a ‘Member’s Area”. Most commercial or corporate online sites that have a member’s area charge a recurring fee to be admitted. You however, are not going to do that. Your member’s area will be absolutely free. All they have to do is subscribe. When they subscribe, they get access to this other site (which can be all part of the same domain) and of course you then have autoresponders set up so you can, over the course of a period of time (usually about 2 weeks), seduce them into buying from you. Works like a charm. Read on…
OK, so this member’s area sounds really cold and lifeless doesn’t it? Doesn’t even sound particularly interesting. This is where you have to put on your creative hat. Don’t call it a member’s area. Personally, I call mine “Backstage”, but you could call it anything you like. How about “V.I.P. Only”. Or “Private Invite Only”. Imagine you are opening a really hip new nightclub and you want only a certain style of person there. Imagine a selective New York nightclub where there is always a line outside and only the beautiful and famous people get to come in. By the way, did you know that there is never usually a need for a line outside a nightclub? How many times have you lined up for half an hour, then been admitted and walked into a half full club? The club is creating a perception that they are extremely popular. But no, all clubs do it because it makes them look good. Adopt this way of thinking for your website. Make it a real ‘inside thing’. Kind of like you have to know somebody to get in. There is a website called www.smallworld.com who have successfully done this, and everybody of course is clamoring to be a part of this highly exclusive place. It is brilliant marketing.
So think about this other new site of yours. What do you call it? How will it be? What do fans have to do to get in? Think about this. It’s your world. Make it fascinating and exclusive. Then build this other member’s site and make it something folks want to come back to. The truth is, you now have their contact info so it almost doesn’t matter to you what they do, but you do want them to remain in your world, so think about what you could do to grab their attention. I’ll give you some ideas.
Your main website will have all the basic stuff like; About you, bio, photos, tour info, subscribe to newsletter, blah blah blah. All good stuff. But this other private site of yours has to contain highly personal, intimate and fascinating stuff that fans can pore over, that they can’t get from your main site. In short, there has to be a seductive and ‘slam dunk’ reason why a visitor would give up their contact info. Let’s face it, with spam issues, it takes a lot these days. Here are a few ideas.
We are living in a youtube world right now. There is every reason to make videos and it’s easy to do, and dirt cheap. So…
*Have a band member shoot video of you before and after gigs, hanging out, sound checking, chatting to fans, doing stupid and embarrassing stuff. Make youtube videos and embed them on your VIP member’s site.
*Make audio interviews for fans to click on.
*Have a photos library and build it over time.
*Have a reading room where fans can read glowing (and not so glowing) reviews of your albums and shows.
*Have a band blog or message board where fans can personally interact. Make all band members participate. Build personal relationships with your fans.
*Give away free music.
*Think of anything else fun and creative that fans would want to see in your private room online.
If you are the meek or mild type, you know, all introverted and shy and bashful. Here’s what I have to say to you; Turn that around pal, because you have to be larger than life! Fans want it that way. They want stars and they want to put their stars on pedestals and worship them. Even if you feel a little insecure in this department, do not translate that online. BE LARGER THAN LIFE! The reason I say this is because you have to be confident enough to think that your fans actually want to know more about you.
OK finally, you have completed your private member’s room. On your original website (www.yourname.com) you are going to coax your visitors to your private site area. You can do this on every page of your original website. You can see this whole marketing process on my personal site at www.chrisstandring.com and you can see my “Backstage” private VIP area at www.chrisstandring.com/backstage There, you will see the use of a new marketing idea called Peel-Away-Ads. In the top far right of all my web pages their is a seductive script that makes you want to click on the link that takes you to the Backstage sign up page. You could also place banners and clever text links wherever appropriate. Be creative here.
This whole private member’s area is an intriguing idea for visitors because up until now, most bands offer things like “Subscribe to our newsletter so we can tell you where and when we are playing”. Is this enough anymore? Absolutely not. We have to be creative.
And what do you do when you have your new fan’s contact information? You set up a series of autoresponders that do all the work for you. What this essentially means is, a series of emails written by you personally that gets sent out over a period of time that you specify. Once a week over a period of say 7 weeks, seems to work. You set up these emails like newsletters where you talk about different things your band is doing, or has done. Mostly over time you are going to talk about your CD(s) that you want them to know all about and of course preview and finally buy. Anytime you have something new to tell your fans, you send out a broadcast email. Whenever your new CD comes out, you have a growing list of subscribers to sell it to. Direct targeted online marketing. This is the world you now live in.
If you want to really get into marketing online in a serious way, and do it right from the start, and sell a boatload of CDs online, all the fine details can be found in my Indie Artist DIY Smartkit. http://www.aandronline.com/smartkit/index.html – I talk about all the pitfalls of marketing online and how you can avoid them from the start.
This stuff isn’t going to happen for you overnight, but it will happen, and you can sell a lot of albums if you do it right. Go get ‘em!
I’m about to tell you a new and highly effective way to sell CDs online from your own website.
OK, now you have a steady flow of traffic to your website. Of course you need to make the site fascinating and seductive. Here’s what you need to understand about your site;
Go get ‘em!

Slipknot Extends Their Early Success
by admin on Aug.05, 2009, under Music
Jimmy Cox asked:
Based in Des Moines, Iowa, Slipknot has been entertaining adoring fans for more than ten years with their alternative metal, heavy metal, nu metal, and rapcore albums and singles. The group, which is currently on hiatus, has been attracting a following with their rather extreme musical and performance style since 1995.
Background Information
Consisting of nine members, Slipknot has produced the majority of their music under the Roadrunner label since 1997. The band utilizes a common guitar arrangement, showcasing the talents of a lead and rhythm guitarist, as well as a bassist. A unique characteristic associated with the band is that unlike other groups, Slipknot includes two percussionists alongside their primary drummer. Through their evolution, Slipknot moved from near growling vocal sounds to the more recent melodic-infused style, while the lyrics have always presented aggressive tones and dark subject matter, including anger and nihilism.
Brief Career History
The group was known during its early years as The Pale Ones, Meld, and Pyg system before settling on their current name. It was during that time that most of the songs appearing on the album “Mate.Feed.Kill.Repeat” and later productions were created. Before Joey Jordison became a part of the band, the lead drummer position was given to Shawn Crahan (the founder of the group). It was Crahan who wished to create a distinct tribal resonance and what he called a wall of sound by using three drummers. Jordison is credited with later designing the band logo, which capitalized the k to pay homage to one of their major influences, Korn.
Over the years, many changes occurred in the lineup of the band. After the release of their first album on Halloween 1996, lead vocalist Anders Colsefini was moved to percussion and replaced with Corey Taylor. Colsefini left the band soon after, just before the group solidified a deal with Roadrunner Records. A self-titled album followed, and the group began to make their rounds touring with Ozzfest and achieving platinum sales status in 2000. This was a first for any album associated with Roadrunner Records.
A second album, “Iowa,” was released in 2001, as the band once again toured, appeared in several different concerts, and was nominated for a Grammy in 2002. After the release of their fourth album, which continued to experiment with different song structures, additional tours were booked; a live album was released; and after a Grammy win for Best Metal Performance for “Before I Forget” in 2006, an interview with Corey Taylor revealed the group would take a break until 2008 while band members worked on side projects.
Current Members
Designated numbers and the masks identify current Slipknot members. Sid Wilson (0, turntables) wears a skull mask; Joey Jordison (1, drums) wears a white Japanese Noh mask with black lines; Paul Gray (2, bass guitar) wears a Hannibal-Lecter-type mask; Chris Fehn (3, custom percussion and backing vocals) wears a Pinocchio-style mask connected to a leather hood with zippable mouth; James Root (4, rhythm guitar) wears a white Jester mask; Craig Jones (5, keyboards) wears a mask with black needles coming from all directions; Shawn Crahan (6, custom percussion, backing vocals) traded a happy clown face for the look of a bloody, bandaged clown; Mick Thompson (7, lead guitar) wears a metal face with a grill-style mouth cover; and Corey Taylor (8, lead vocals) wears a Leatherface stitched face mask.
Former Members
Over the years, Slipknot has made a handful of changes to their lineup, especially with their guitar players. Former band members include Donnie Steele (guitar); Greg Welts (percussion); Josh Brainard (guitar and backing vocals); John Green (guitar); Quan Nong (guitar); and Patrick Neuwirth (guitar).
Discography and Musical Achievements
Released under a small record company based in Nebraska in 1996, “Mate.Feed.Kill.Repeat” became Slipknot’s first album. Under Roadrunner Records, the group has reached two-time platinum status with their second album, “Slipknot” (1999), followed by the 2001 platinum record “Iowa”; the 2004 platinum record, “Vol. 3 (The Subliminal Verses)”; and the 2005 “9.0 Live.” An anticipated album is currently scheduled for a 2008 release. The single “Duality” from their 2004 album reached the Top 10 lists across U.S. modern rock and mainstream rock charts.
Slipknot’s work has also appeared on a series of major motion picture soundtracks, including “Rollerball” (I Am Hated); “Resident Evil” (My Plague); “Resident Evil: Apocalypse” (Vermillion); “Scream 3″ (Wait and Bleed); and “Freddy vs. Jason” (Snap). Over the years, the band has released a couple of DVDs which have reached a multiple-platinum sales status. “Welcome To Our Neighborhood” (1999), “Disasterpieces” (2002), and “Voliminal: Inside The Nine” (2006) has all become popular DVD selections.
Overall, the band has appeared on a wide range of major national and international tours, such as Ozzfest and various events in Stockholm and Japan. The group easily reached the level of Grammy award status, as nominations for the Best Metal Performance and Best Hard Rock Performance were bestowed upon singles from three out of four of their albums. In 2006, they took home their first Grammy.
